1986 Porsche 961: the only Porsche 959 track race car ever built! – Turbo Sounds & Driving Scenes
From 19Bozzy92.
Built as the racing version of the Porsche 959, the 961 had a very short life. At the beginning of the ’80s when Group B and Group C were conceived to modernize the World Sports-Prototype Championship, Porsche created the 956 as a Group C car and a concept, simply called Porsche Group B, to join this class for which it was mandatory to have a production version in order to compete.
So Porsche Group B concept car become the Porsche 959 but by the time this street-legal car was ready, Gr. B rules had been altered to better suit the class for WRC use penalizing the Sports-Prototype Championship. Porsche however went ahead in the 959 production in order to reach the approval number and to continue the development of a 959-based race car.
Taking a 959, chassis 10016, the new race car was called 961 and it was the only one ever created and raced. Keeping the 4WD layout used in the 959, the 961 is still one of the very few car to ever race the Le Mans 24h with a four-wheel drive system. It was powered by a 2.9-litre twin-turbo flat-6 engine that was able to produce 680hp at 7800 rpm (lowered at 640hp during the race) and 650 Nm of torque. It did only 3 races: 1986 Le Mans 24h (7th overall), 1986 3 Hours of Daytona and the 1987 24h of Le Mans where the car caught fire. After this the project was cancelled but the 961 was repaired and put on display in Porsche’s own museum.
1983 Porsche 956 Gr. C Accelerations Sound
From 19Bozzy92’s YouTube channel. This is video of the 1983 New Man Joest Racing Porsche 956, a car that was driven by the late, great Formula 1 World Champion Ayrton Senna, in 1984, a decade before he lost his life at the peak of his career in the Formula 1 San Marino Grand Prix at Imola, Italy, in 1994. Here is 19Bozzy92’s description of the car, and the equipment he used, to film it.
I saw this Porsche 965 group C car in action on track during the 2014 Ayrton Senna Tribute at Imola racetrack. The car (chassis #104) was built in 1983 and bought by Joest Racing which used the car in many races between 1983 and 1986. In 1984 the 956-104 took part in the 1000km of Nurburgring Nordschelife with Ayrton Senna, Henri Pescarolo and Stefan Johansson. The Porsche 956 is moved by a 2.65L turbocharged Flat-6 engine which is able to produce around 635 hp. Nowdays the car is owned by Alexander Seibold.

Group C Race of The Day: 1987 Jarama
A thrilling season was to come in 1987 and it all began at the Jarama circuit in Spain for the opening round of the World Sports Car Championship. The documentary “Supersprint 1” tells the story.
The 1987 World Sports Car Championship starts it’s 12 race series with a 360 kilometer event at the Jarama Circuit in Spain. With both Porsche and Jaguar so evenly matched, there is little doubt that the 1987 season will be the best year since the Group C regulations began, back in 1982. We join commentators Paul Fowler on play-by-play, and Mark Cole for pit lane interviews, at Jarama, for all the action. The last time Jarama saw worldwide motorsports, was the Formula 1 Spanish Grand Prix in 1981. Enjoy.
